Fraunces Tavern Museum has continued to keep Revolutionary War history alive in the New York City area.

This past year, we opened our exhibition Lafayette: A Hero’s Return, celebrating the Bicentennial of Marquis de Lafayette’s return to the United States. We also reopened The Birch Trials at Fraunces Tavern in a new gallery in the Museum. The exhibition highlights the role of Fraunces Tavern—the site of the Birch Trials in 1783—in the emancipation of thousands of Black Loyalists at the end of the Revolutionary War. Recognition is also given to the thousands of Black Patriots who fought to further the cause of American Independence.

Other exhibits also recognize events that occurred at Fraunces Tavern, including our Long Room (where George Washington bade farewell to his officers in 1783) and Governing the Nation from Fraunces Tavern (recognizing the use of Fraunces Tavern in 1785–1788 as the site of offices of the Departments of Foreign Affairs and War and the Board of Treasury, while the Nation’s capital was in New York City). Beginning in April 2025, we will open a series of exhibits commemorating the 250th anniversary of key events in the American Revolution.

Alongside our exhibitions, we have maintained our programming including our monthly evening lecture series and our popular reenactment of George Washington’s Farewell to his Officers in our Long Room.

We continue to face significant challenges, including expensive capital projects to maintain our five historic buildings (305 years old, in the case of Fraunces Tavern). We very much need your support to continue the work of our Museum and maintain our historic structures.
