Mary Tsaltas-Ottomanelli sits down with Dan Shippey the day after the museum’s annual Washington’s Farewell Open House.
This was Dan Shippey’s third year reenacting Washington’s famous farewell toast in the Museum’s historic Long Room. In 2017, Shippey was joined by Ian Kahn, who portrayed General Washington on the AMC series TURN: Washington’s Spies. Dan served as Ian Kahn’s historical advisor and collaborator during Ian Kahn’s time working on the show.
Dan Shippey is the founder of The Breed’s Hill Institute, an organization that fosters discovery of the revolutionary ideas of the American founding through entertainment, education, and community projects. The organization’s Facebook page posts daily posts on Revolutionary figures, events, and documents. Shippey, and his wife Kelly, have been portraying George and Martha Washington since 2008 on the West Coast, where the Shippey’s live. Adorably enough the Shippey’s have the same height and age difference as the Washington’s making them the perfect pair to reenact the famous first couple.
